| Conan the Barbarian movie - 2011 Director: Marcus Nispel Stars: Jason Momoa, Ron Perlman, Rose McGowan Release Date: August 19, 2011 Synopsis: A Cimmerian warrior (Jason Momoa) on a quest to avenge the murder of his father and the slaughter of his village encounters a supernatural threat to the nations of Hyboira. Why We're Excited: After the worst teaser trailer in recent memory, we are, in all seriousness, totally more interested in seeing to what degree this remake will sully the legend created by Arnold Schwarzenegger and writer/director John Milius. That said, we like Jason Momoa as a humanitarian and wish him luck as he attempts a seemingly impossible feat of reinterpreting an iconic character. And if there is a sequel, we give an idea - considration he should face off against the evil-doers who create cheapie 3D fantasies. Why We're Not: If we spent years developing a project that saw Brett Ratner come and go (phew), then someone said we should go with director Marcus Nispel -- who has directed four movies, all of them remakes -- we'd consider letting Robert E. Howard rest in peace by spiking the project, or perhaps giving it a new graphic-novel treatment first in an attempt to earn some fanboy cred. Trivia: Jason Momoa, the new Conan, has two children with girlfriend Lisa Bonet. Conan the Barbarian is a 3-D sword and sorcery film based on the character Conan the Barbarian created by Robert E. Howard. The film, shot in 2010 and released in 2011, is a new interpretation of the Conan mythology, and is not related to the films featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger. It stars Jason Momoa in the titular role, alongside Rachel Nichols, Rose McGowan, Stephen Lang, Ron Perlman, and Bob Sapp with Marcus Nispel directing. The film had spent seven years in development at Warner Bros. before the rights were shifted to Nu Image/Millennium Films in 2007, with a clause wishing for immediate start on production. Lionsgate and Sony Pictures entered negotiations for distribution, with the film seeing many directors, prominently Brett Ratner, before settling on Nispel in 2009 and subsequently bringing together a cast and crew. Filming began on March 15, 2010 and concluded on June 5, 2010. The film was first released on August 17, 2011 in four countries: France, Belgium, Iceland and the Philippines. For later releases, in other countries. As the film begins, a young Cimmerian boy, Conan is being educated by his father Corin on the importance of steel to their people. Soon after, a group of warriors led by a warlord systematically destroys Conan's village to obtain part of a mask in Corin's possession. Left to die with his son, who is holding the vat of molten l placed above him, Corin sacrifices himself so Conan can live. Having ventured into an unforgiving world, hunting down the warlord for years, a now-adult Conan finally gets a lead when he learns Lucius, one of the men who ransacked Conan's village and whose nose he'd chopped off, became a warden. Allowing himself to be imprisoned, Conan confronts Lucius, learning that the warlord is known as Khalar Zym before forcing him to swallow the keys to every prisoner's shackles so Lucius would be slaughtered by them. On his path of revenge, Conan chances upon Tamara, a beautiful novice nun and a descendant of the bloodline of the necromancers who first created the mask. Zym s her blood to restore the mask so he can use its power to revive his wife. Learning of this from Remo, Khalar Zym's henchman, Conan brings Tamara along with him to use her as bait. Along the way he falls for her and, after she's kidnapped by Marique, Khalar Zym's witch daughter, he fights through Khalar Zym's followers, destroys the mask and ends by accompanying Tamara to her city before returning to his burned-down village. |
