My wife and I tend to do it this way.

1. We are talking and notice a conflict (money, goals, priorities, methods, whatever)
2. (I tend to go first), I say "my goal is X"
3. My wife goes "My goal is Y"
4. If X and Y are the same or similar, we come up with a plan
5. If goals are radically different, we decide whether we can accommodate both or if one should take priority
6. If both can be accommodated, we come up with a plan
7. If one should take priority, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each
8. We decide which one takes priority (we both tend to win about half the time)
9. We come up with a plan

We have been married for almost 12 years so we tend to do it now and realize what we did later. What is your style?

As salaam alaikum wa rahmatullah,

I have always felt doubt regarding one's Tahaarah if using a western style toilet. For example when one urinates it can easily splash on to your inner thigh and if doing a number 2 the water can splash up if you drop a big one.

Is it sufficient to use water and tissue to clean oneself? Or must one then go and wash his inner thigh and backside cheeks to clear any possibility of splashing water having reached those areas? Or am I being too cautious?

Carma Hassan is a broadcast journalist in the Bay Area who whole-heartedly believes in wishing on dandelions.


Lots of food trucks pepper city streets around the Bay Area, but there's only one bringing fresh, hot meals to the hungry.

A new program initiated by the Bay Area chapter of the Islamic Circle of North America, or ICNA, debuted its yellow "Mercy on Wheels" truck today. The converted and retrofitted DHL delivery truck will trek across the Bay to San Francisco and Oakland where the religious group plans on serving almost 400 Halal meals every month. The steaming plates of curried chicken, rice, and mixed vegetables are donated by Santa Clara's Crescent Circle and the Shalimar restaurant chain with food costing the program about $45,000 a year. The truck, which cost ICNA $35,000 is the first in a fleet they hope to expand; the group purchased another truck but lack the funds they need to retrofit it.

The Silicon Valley based-Muslim organization currently dishes up meals in three spots once a month - 32nd Street and San Pablo in Oakland, at the United Nations Plaza in San Francisco, and at a mosque about two blocks away from the Plaza.

ICNA serves anyone needing a free meal, whether they are Muslim or not.

"We started sharing food during a time of sacrifice and feast," said Ameen Ashraf, vice president of ICNA. "Doing it once a year was good, but we thought we should be sharing food more often. It's our faith. God requires us to feed the hungry."

Why do we read Quran, even if we can't understand a single Arabic word???? This is a beautiful story.

An old American Muslim lived on a farm in the mountains of eastern Kentucky with his young grandson. Each morning Grandpa was up early sitting at the kitchen table reading his Quran. His grandson wanted to be just like him and tried to imitate him in every way he could.

One day the grandson asked, "Grandpa! I try to read the Quran just like you but I don't understand it, and what I do understand I forget as soon as I close the book. What good does reading the Qur'an do?"

The Grandfather quietly turned from putting coal in the stove and replied, "Take this coal basket down to the river and bring me back a basket of water."

The boy did as he was told, but all the water leaked out before he got back to the house. The grandfather laughed and said, "You'll have to move a little faster next time," and sent him back to the river with the basket to try again. This time the boy ran faster, but again the basket was empty before he returned home. Out of breath, he told his grandfather that it was impossible to carry water in a basket, and he went to get a bucket instead.

The old man said, "I don't want a bucket of water; I want a basket of water. You're just not trying hard enough," and he went out the door to watch the boy try again.

At this point, the boy knew it was impossible, but he wanted to show his grandfather that even if he ran as fast as he could, the water would leak out before he got back to the house. The boy again dipped the basket into river and ran hard, but when he reached his grandfather the basket was again empty. Out of breath, he said, "See Grandpa, it's useless!"

"So you think it is useless?" The old man said, "Look at the basket."

The boy looked at the basket and for the first time realized that the basket was different. It had been transformed from a dirty old coal basket and was now clean, inside and out.

"Son, that's what happens when you read the Qur'an. You might not understand or remember everything, but when you read it, you will be changed, inside and out. That is the work of Allah in our lives."

Note: This is not to say that we shouldn’t read or learn the meaning of Quran, we must and it’s very important.

KABUL, Afghanistan — The top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan warned Tuesday that an American church's threat to burn copies of the Muslim holy book the Quran could endanger U.S. troops in the country and Americans worldwide.

"Images of the Burning of a Quran would undoubtedly be used by extremists in Afghanistan — and around the world — to inflame public opinion and incite violence," Gen. David Petraeus said in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

His comments followed a protest Monday by hundreds of Afghans over the plans by Gainesville, Florida-based Dove World Outreach Center — an evangelical Christian church that espouses anti-Islam philosophy — to burn copies of the Quran on church grounds to mark the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States that provoked the Afghan war.

Muslims consider the Quran to be the word of God and insist that it be treated with the utmost respect, along with any printed material containing its verses or the name of Allah or the Prophet Muhammad. Any intentional damage or show of disrespect to the Quran is deeply offensive.

In 2005, 15 people died and scores were wounded in riots in Afghanistan sparked by a story in Newsweek magazine alleging that interrogators at the U.S. detention center in Guantanamo Bay placed copies of the Quran in washrooms and had flushed one down the toilet to get inmates to talk. Newsweek later retracted the story.

At Monday's protest, several hundred Afghans rallied outside a Kabul mosque, burning American flags and an effigy of Dove World's pastor and chanting "death to America." Members of the crowd briefly pelted a passing U.S. military convoy with stones, but were ordered to stop by rally organizers.

Two days earlier, thousands of Indonesian Muslims had rallied outside the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta and in five other cities to protest the church's plans.

Petraeus warned images of burning Qurans could be used to incite anti-American sentiments similar to the pictures of prisoner abuse at Iraq's Abu Graib (ah-booh GRABE) prison.

"I am very concerned by the potential repercussions of the possible (Quran) burning. Even the rumor that it might take place has sparked demonstrations such as the one that took place in Kabul yesterday," Petraeus said in his message. "Were the actual burning to take place, the safety of our soldiers and civilians would be put in jeopardy and accomplishment of the mission would be made more difficult."

The U.S. Embassy in Kabul also issued a statement condemning the church's plans, saying Washington was "deeply concerned about deliberate attempts to offend members of religious or ethnic groups."

Dove World Outreach Center, which made headlines last year after distributing T-shirts that said "Islam is of the Devil," has been denied a permit to set a bonfire but has vowed to proceed with the burning.

A surge in troop deployments has brought the number of U.S. forces battling the Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan to about 100,000 and Petraeus is asking for 2,000 more soldiers to join the 140,000-strong international force here, NATO officials said Monday. It was unclear how many would be Americans.

Coalition officials said nearly half will be trainers for the rapidly expanding Afghan security forces and will include troops trained to neutralize roadside bombs that have been responsible for about 60 percent of the 2,000 allied deaths in the nearly 9-year war.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not supposed to talk about the issue with media, said the NATO-led command had been asking for the troops even before Gen. David Petraeus assumed command here in July.

Petraeus recently renewed that request with the NATO command in Brussels. The alliance has had trouble raising more troops for the war effort, with at least 450 training slots still unfilled after more than a year.

With casualties rising, the war has become deeply unpopular in many of NATO's 28 member countries, suggesting the additional forces will have to come from the United States. In Europe, polls show the majority of voters consider it an unnecessary drain on finances at a time of sharp cuts in public spending and other austerity measures.

I am making this post regarding the issue of Police checkpoints and internal border patrol checkpoints. My interest in this issue was sparked when my wife encountered a checkpoint two years ago.

If you are not too familiar with checkpoints, they are sometimes described as a short term dragnet that takes places in a particular area. Law enforcement waits for motorists to approach them for an encounter. DWI checkpoints are the most well-known type of checkpoint, but there are many others. The other checkpoints are efforts to make sure everyone is complying with law or attempts to discover civil and criminal violations. Examples of these checkpoints are seatbelt, proper child seat installation, car registration, car insurance card, driver license, fireworks, hunting, vehicle inspection, and citizenship.

My research after my checkpoint encounter showed some startling evidience. I looked at police reports, research, and many ********s showing that checkpoints are ineffective. There is evidence showing saturation patrols ALWAYS work better than checkpoints. There is research showing that checkpoints DO NOT deter people from drunk driving. There is evidence of police interacting with mostly law abiding citizens while criminals roam free. There is evidence that internal border checkpoints are encouraging and allowing illegal activity at the U.S.-Mexican border.

My question is whether anyone here is interested in the ineffectiveness of checkpoints. I would also like to hear from anyone who has taken action regarding checkpoints and efforts to stop them.

When I buy soy milk I buy the 1 946 ml boxs that don't need to be refridgerated until you open them. I buy soy milk this way because I like to buy it on sale, and the easiest way to do this is wait until there is a sale and then buy 12-24 boxs of it that doesn't need to be in the fridge. When you open a box, you put it in the fridge. I save about 33-66 cents a litre this way, which adds up considering I drink soy milk every day. The soy milk doesn't expire for a long time, probably 6 months or longer.

Last time I went to the store for soy milk soy Dream was the brand on sale and it didn't expire for 4 months so I bought 12 of them. As time went on it began to get clumpy. I called them to complain and they brushed it off as not a big deal. They assured me I was keeping it in the correct conditions, and it never tasted bad. The last box of it I drank was the clumpiest and I just didn't find it very appetizing watching it pour into a cup of coffee or bowl of cereal and because of this I will never buy this brand again. I have never had this occur with any other brand on soy milk, so I still suggest stocking up on other brands of non refrigerate soy milk.

I'm not sure what the rules are here, but I was really wondering what vegetarians reasons are for being what they are. I know when I first started considering animal rights, I was only vegetarian for about 2 days, because I read about chickens and cows living conditions and was horrified, but there seems to me a lot of vegetarians. Is that because you want to make a difference but being vegan is just too hard or does being vegan not make sense to some of you?

BTW, I've been vegan about 7 months now, and just had a conversation in vegan chat about considering going Vegetarian, but they convinced me it wasn't a moral choice.

Pulitzer-winning political cartoonist Paul Conrad dies at 86

Artists of that caliber are... complicated individuals. He was an American original; during the golden age of political cartoons, he was one of the giants.

طلب النجم الأرجنتيني ليونيل ميسي بمنح فرصة العمل "في هدوء" لسرخيو باتيستا المدير الفني لمنتخب بلاده لكرة القدم ، كما طالب بإعداد الفريق للمنافسة بأقصى قوة على لقب بطولة كوبا أمريكا العام المقبل التي تستضيفها الأرجنتين.

وقال ميسي في مقابلة نشرتها اليوم صحيفة "سبورت" الرياضية الأسبانية "لا أعتقد أن استمرار باتيستا يعتمد على نتائج هذه المباريات (الودية). أعتقد شخصيا أن هناك عملا وراء كل شيء ، ولذلك لابد من تركه يقوم بعمله في هدوء. بالنسبة لنا الأمر الأهم الآن هو كوبا أمريكا".

However famous and easily available the Stop smoking drugs may be, it is extremely important to take them under medical supervision. The FDA has issued Warnings against Drugs like Chantix and Zyban as people taking these drugs show signs of mental depression and suicidal thoughts.

Drugs like Bupropion or Zyban are antidepressants that affect the chemicals that are used by the nervous system to send messages to other parts. These chemicals are called neurotransmitters. The imbalance in the amount of neurotransmitters may sometimes cause depression. The nerves sometimes recycle the neurotransmitters which is called reuptake. Bupropion inhibits the uptake of the transmitters and causes an excess of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine thus causing an imbalance and hence leading to depression. Bupropion is also given for management of major depression and seasonal affective disorder. Antidepressants increase the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior especially in children and adolescents with depression and other psychiatric disorders. The recommended dosage of these drugs should be taken correctly. The excess or lower dose increases the risk of seizure.

Dry mouth, headache, increased sweating, nausea or vomiting, constipation, anxiety, fatigue and blurred vision are some of the other side effects. The persistence or worsening of these side effects may be dangerous. Unusual weight gain or loss, palpitations, agitation and trouble sleeping should be reported immediately.

These medicines are generally not recommended in cases where the patient already has the problem of seizures, eating disorders, has had head injury, brain tumor, heart disease, high blood pressure, liver problems, kidney problems, any mental conditions, alcohol or drug dependence.

Astrophysicist Dr. Nir Shaviv, one of Israel's top young award winning scientists, recanted his belief that manmade emissions were driving climate change. Geophysicist Dr. Claude Allegre, a top geophysicist and French Socialist who has authored more than 100 scientific articles and written 11 books and received numerous scientific awards including the Goldschmidt Medal from the Geochemical Society of the United States, converted from climate alarmist to skeptic in 2006. Allegre, who was one of the first scientists to sound global warming fears 20 years ago, now says the cause of climate change is "unknown" and accused the “prophets of doom of global warming” of being motivated by money, noting that "the ecology of helpless protesting has become a very lucrative business for some people!"

Mathematician & engineer Dr. David Evans, who did carbon accounting for the Australian Government, recently detailed his conversion to a skeptic. “I devoted six years to carbon accounting, building models for the Australian government to estimate carbon emissions from land use change and forestry. When I started that job in 1999 the evidence that carbon emissions caused global warming seemed pretty conclusive, but since then new evidence has weakened the case that carbon emissions are the main cause. I am now skeptical,”

Geologist Bruno Wiskel of the University of Alberta recently reversed his view of man-made climate change and instead became a global warming skeptic.

" هل أنتم طائعون فى كل شئ ؟ " ( 2 كو 2 : 9 )


+ يرى الأباء أن مفاتيح السعادة للإنسان هى : " الطاعة والوداعة والقناعة " وهى حقيقة ، ويجب التمسك بالفضائل الثلاثة ، فى كل زمان ومكان ، لأجل راحة الإنسان ، ونيل رضا الرب والناس .

+ وإن كان الجواب عن السؤال المذكور بالإيجاب ، فهو خطأ دينى ، لأن هناك طاعة مقبولة ، وأخرى مرذولة .

+ فالطاعة المقبولة : تتمثل فى طاعة الله ، وطاعة وصاياه ، وطاعة الوالدين والأهل ، والآباء الحكماء ، والمرشدين الروحيين ، وأصحاب الخبرة ، والعلم السليم ، من العلمانيين ، ورجال الدين المختبرين وهى طاعة واجبة .

+ فقد شدد القديس بولس الرسول على أهمية فضيلة " الطاعة " فى كل حياة المؤمن ( من الجنسين ) ، وثمارها عظيمة جداً ، على الأرض وفى السماء .

+ وقدم الرسول " الرب يسوع " كمثال عظيم للطاعة الكاملة ، منذ طفولته ، فقال : " مع كونه إبناً تعلم الطاعة " ( عب 5 : 8 ) وسجل البشير لوقا فى إنجيله ، أنه منذ كان الصبى يسوع ، فى سن الثانية عشرة ، يمضى مع القديس يوسف ، ومع أمه البتول مريم ، إلى هيكل أورشليم فى الأعياد ، وأنه : " كان خاضعاً لهما " ( لو 2 : 51 ) .

+ كما أن الفادى خضع لإرادة الله الآب ، لخلاص الناس " ووضع نفسه وأطاع حتى الموت ، موت الصليب " ( فيلبى 2 : 8 ) وقلده الشهداء .

+ كما أمتدح القديس بولس ، إبراهيم أبو الآباء " الذى لما دعى أن يخرج ، فخرج ( سار مع الله ) إلى المكان الذى كان عتيداً أن يأخذه ميراثاً " ( عب 11 : 8 ) .

+ كما أمتدح أيضاً شعب كنيسة روما ، لأنهم أطاعوا الرب ، من كل القلب ( رو 6 : 17 ) ، ووبخ سكان غلاطية ، على عدم طاعتهم للوصايا المسيحية ( غل 5 : 7 ) ، وطالب تلميذه الأسقف القديس تيطس بأن يحث شعبه ، لكى يطيعوا الله ( تى 3 : 1 ) ، حتى يكونوا أهلاً للنجاة من عقابه الأبدى ( عب 3 : 18 ) .

+ وقال لحديثى السن والشباب : " أيها الأولاد أطيعوا والديكم فى الرب " ( كو 3 : 20 ) .

+ وقال لنا جميعاً : " أطيعوا مرشديكم ، واخضعوا لهم " ( عب 13 : 7 ) .

+ وأيضاً : " مستأثرين كل فكر إلى طاعة المسيح " ( 2 كو 10 : 5 ) .
+ وأيضاً : " أنتم عبيد للذى تُطيعونه : إما للخطية للموت ، أو للطاعة للبر " رو 6 16 ) . فمن تُطيع ؟! .

+ الطاعة المرذولة :
+ ويجب رفض طاعة الأشرار ، والهراطقة الضالين : " لأنه ينبغى أن يُطاع الله أكثر من الناس " ( أع 5 : 21 ) ، ( تى 3 : 3 ) ، وهؤلاء العُصاة لهم عقابهم من الله ، ومعهم كل الطائعين لإنحرافاتهم العقائدية ( عب 3 : 18 ) ، ( 2 تس 1 : 8 ) .
+ وقال أيوب الصديق : " إن سمعوا وأطاعوا ، قضُوا أيامهم بالخير ( بالسلام ) وسنيّهم بالنعم ، وإن لم يسمعوا ( يطيعوا ) فبحربة الموت يزولون " ( أى 36 : 11 ) . مثل قوم نوح وسدوم .
+ والسؤال لك الآن ( يا أخى / يا أختى ) : من سوف تُطيع ؟ صوت الشيطان ؟ أم صوت الرب الحنّان ؟ وما هى النتيجة المتوقعة ، من نوعى تلك الطاعة ؟! .
+ وعليك أن تقرأ وأن تسمع ما يقوله الوحى المقدس – والخدام والوعاظ – عن شخصيات أطاعت وتباركت وأفلحت ، ونوعيات أخرى غير حكيمة .
+ ويقول المثل الشعبى الحقيقى : " إن المُخالف حاله تالف " وهو أمر واضح ، ولا ينكره عاقل ولا جاهل ، ويحتاج إلى مزيد من التأمل ، واختيار الأفضل ، حتى يفرح وينجح ويرتاح ، فى الأرض وفى عالم المجد ، ولا يرتبط بالعالم وبالجسد ، فيضيع إلى الأبد .

In Maraqi al Falah it is mentioned:

A group of scholars said that there is nothing specific for the supplication. The best is that he reads, after the preceding supplication, the Witr supplication of Hasan ibn ‘Ali, Allah be pleased with them both, who said, “The Messenger of Allah, upon him be blessings and peace, taught me words that I read in witr” – and in one wording “in the witr supplication” – Hakim narrated it. In it he said, “When I raise my head and only prostration remains, “Allah, guide me with those who You have guided....”

I did want to ask what did Hakim narrated precisely i.e. “When I raise my head and only prostration remains, “Allah, guide me with those who You have guided....”

Can someone post the text of the above ahadith and its versions ? Is there proof in this that this duaa should be read after the ruku ? Or is it after the first sajdah when only prostaration remains ? Or what is ment with the sentence: “When I raise my head and only prostration remains...” ?

So its my first time giving Zakat and i want to give a little to like 3 diff charities. so is it allowed for me to give Zakat through the Ummah Welfare Trust Website? Will my zakat be accepted if i gave it through the internet?
Becuase usually my family gives it to the local mosque, which i am doing too, but i wana give some to UWT as well.

also, if someone didnt give zakat for a previous year due to forgetfulness, if they give it a year after with the zakat of that present year too will their zakat be accepted?

Id appreciate it if Ulamas answered.
